The United Arab Emirates, or the UAE as it is generally known, is a federation of seven emirates on the Persian Gulf southeast of the Arabian Peninsula. Rich in culture and history, it is an ideal starting point for travels in the Middle East. In recent years, with extensive building projects and rapidly expanding trade markets, both the tourist industry and the number of business visitors to the country has ballooned resulting in the development of many fine hotels. The hotels UAE offer include some of the most lavish and opulent in the world and have become the play ground of the international jet set as well as heads of state and royalty.
The capital and second largest city is Abu Dhabi and is the counties center of political, industrial and cultural activities. Dubai is the largest city and most forward thinking and modern and is the destination of a large percentage of the tourist influx to the UAE. The other emirates are Sharjah, Ajman, Umm-al-Quwain, Ras al-Khaimah and Fujairah. These are less well-know to the outside world as they have much stricter views and rules concerning religion, alcohol, and general living conditions.
The 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries saw the country grow with a thriving pearl business. This was almost destroyed after the Second World War and it was the discovery of oil, first in Abu Dhabi and then in Dubai in the 1960's that saw such a dramatic change in the UAE fortunes. The UAE now boasts the world's sixth largest oil reserves and one of the fastest growing tourist industries.
Culture in the UAE revolves around the religion of Islam and traditional Arabian and Bedouin culture. It is a very diverse and multi-cultural society adding to its intrigue and mystery. Mosques are scattered around the country and five times a day people are called to prayer from minarets. Friday is the holiest day with most weekends running from Friday through Saturday. The official language is Arabic but many of the immigrants, who make up nearly 80% of the population, do not speak it. English is the "lingua franca" with most people having some command of the language making it relatively easy for visitors to get by.
The desert landscape is characterized by both white sandy deserts with vast rolling sand dunes and gravel deserts. Two oases in Abu Dhabi provide plenty of underground water and support large settlements and cultivation. Here visitors will find date palms and acacia and eucalyptus trees whereas in the desert, one can only expect to see wild grasses and thornbushes. Summer temperatures push well into the 40's with extreme humidity making outdoor activities impossible. The winter months are milder with cold nights and a few rain showers making this a far more comfortable time to visit the Emirates.
